Byron Bay Bluesfest 2013

To say the Bluesfest in Byron Bay was amazing is an understatement. It is definitely one of the highlights of my year. Amazing artists come from all around the world for this five day music festival in one of the most beautiful towns in Australia. Every year I say the organisers can’t beat the line-up but each year they go

out there and do it again and I’m sure there will be another stellar line-up next year. This year’s Bluesfest had Paul Simon, Iggy Pop, Tony Joe White, Robert Plant, Santana, the Melbourne Street Ska Orchestra, Rodriguez and the Tedeschi Trucks Band etc etc. And that’s just naming a few. Bring on 2014!

We had an awesome time at the stall with great jams all day and night. Here’s some video from the festival – both from the stall and the stages.

Tomorrow is the final pack up day before heading down to Byron Bay for its annual Blues and Roots Festival. The line-up this year is amazing: Tony Joe White, Taj Mahal, Melbourne Street Ska Orchestra, Iggy and the Stooges, Jimmy Cliffs, Chris Smither, Derek Trucks, Robert Plant…the list really is endless. I’ll be ducking out to catch a few acts from time to time. The rest of the time I’ll be at the cigar box guitar stall.

I caught Deniz Tek at the Beetle Bar in Brisbane a couple of Saturday nights ago.Top gig and a great venue. Deniz, guitarist and founding member of legendary Sydney Punk Rock & Roll band Radio Birdman, has a new album out. “Detroit” is an excellent album and has really whet my appetite for more Detroit sounds when Iggy and the Stooges play at Bluesfest. Of course I thrust a CBG into his hands after the gig which he took to like a duck to water. CBGs have that Punk ethos alright. 3 chords. 3 strings! Who cares about frets! 1234!!!

Here are some of the CBGs that will be at Bluesfest with me. Hope to see you at there!

From Agnes Waters to Byron Bay

The Agnes Waters Blues and Roots Festival was an awesome experience. I played the cigar box guitar with Caroline Hammond on percussion on Friday and Saturday to an appreciative crowd, most of whom hadn't seen a CBG before and came to explore later at the stall. I always get a kick out of seeing someone pick up a CBG for the first time to give it a try.

Agnes Waters is about 7 hours drive north of Brisbane. It's a small regional community in a beautiful part of the country and the people at the festival came from all over. They were there for the music and they

loved it. The line-up was stellar and I really enjoyed Devil's Kiosk, Blind Willie Wagtail, Mason Rack, L'il Fi and Phil Emmanuel. The stall was right next to the main stage so I had proximity on my side. And noise. My boy didn't have a problem sleeping through the noise, though. Good training.

Here's a clip from Agnes Waters Blues and Roots Festival:

Back in the workshop now building for the Byron Bay Bluesfest – another amazing line-up and I'm looking forward to seeing some music as well as jamming in the stall.

We've got a great crew at Bluesfest, including Pat Curley who can teach anyone to play the CBG in no time at all. Check out his website if you want more information and some great lessons: He also puts videos on his Facebook page. There's something in the videos for both the beginner and the professional

so check them out:

New build

I'm just out of the workshop with a new build…and I love it. It's called the 'Twin Tone viagra canada pharmacy Ska' cigar box guitar. The pick up is a vintage tiesco and the neck is made of Wenge (African rosewood) and Tasmanian Oak. Here are a couple of photos.

Easter is only around the corner and I'm hard at work in the workshop. I had a delivery of some more cigar boxes from overseas. They'll keep me busy.
